On Saturday August 11, 2001, David and Matthew Griffin rode this popular trail in the Lake Tahoe area. This adventure began as a camping trip to Zephyr Cove Resort just a few miles into Nevada along U.S. highway 50 (see map). From Zephyr Cove, it's a short drive North to Spooner Lake State Park where this epic ride begins. The official Flume Trail web site has a description of the trail and a trail map. They even offer a shuttle return trip to ease the pain, but we are gluttons for punishment and rode the loop option. Here's another web site with a better description of the trail. A short distance from the Spooner Lake parking area is the North Canyon trail head which is approximately at 7000' elevation.

The ride starts with an 1100' climb on this sandy trail. Riding at high elevation is difficult enough with the limited oxygen. But to add a loose sandy terrain only makes this climb even more grueling.

At the top of North Canyon Trail you get nice view of Marlette Lake. You can see the trail as it heads down towards the lake.

Within minutes we are at Marlette Lake. This pristine lake is a beautiful sight to behold. It's difficult to see, but there are a couple of bike riders on the trail on the other side of this lake. Be sure to check out this panorama of Marlette Lake.

Matthew enjoys sitting on a rock at the waters edge. Marlette Lake sits at 7829' above sea level. For perspective, Lake Tahoe at 6229', is 1600' below this lake.
